Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or more popularly known as AIDS is caused by HIV virus. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Having AIDS is merely different from being an HIV positive. A person who is HIV positive is likely to experience wearing or damaging down of immune system. Once the immune system is damaged, opportunistic infections such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses will cause problems in the body. These infections take advantage of the weakened defenses of the body. It is the major cause of death for person with AIDS condition.
HIV virus that causes AIDS attacks the security force of the body that fights off the infections. Once this security force is attacked, the immune system breaks down because the body loses its protection. Because of this, serious diseases such as cancers, tumors, and other deadly infections are also likely to develop.
AIDS condition can reduce progressively the effectiveness of the immune system in the body. The HIV virus causing this condition can be transferred through direct contact of a bloodstream or mucous membrane with a body fluid with HIV. Among these fluids include breast milk, preseminal fluid, vaginal fluid, semen, and blood. Transferring may include breastfeeding, childbirth, exchange between baby and mother during pregnancy, use of contaminated hypodermic needles, blood transfusion, sex through oral, vaginal, or anal, and other exposure to any of the above mentioned fluids.
